Friction tape is made from cotton cloth impregnated with a rubber based adhesive. The adhesive soaks through the cloth backing, making it sticky on both sides. The rubber based adhesive gives it electrical insulating properties. Today, self-amalgamating and PVC tapes have largely replaced friction tape in electrical applications, but its frictional properties (due to the cotton fabric base), make it useful for increasing grip in many other applications, such as on tools and sporting equipment.
